Unlike many other countries, PhD degree in Sweden is considered as a job where the candidates are “employees” and are paid a monthly salary to perform a given task! So, the PhDs have to pay taxes as well.

The process of tax declaration in Sweden is quite simple: Usually the tax is already calculated by skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) and the filled-in income tax declaration form (Inkomstdeklaration 1) is sent out around April for the approval of all those who are obliged to submit a tax return. This form can be accessed by logging in into your account on “Kivra” app or on skatteverket’s website. Unless one has specific taxes, incomes, expenses, etc. to declare, they can approve the declaration form by just signing it electronically.
